3 Days Mount Meru Trek Itinerary
Day 1: Momela Gate to Miriakamba Huts
Your mountain guide meets you at your overnight lodge for a quick clothing and equipment check before the drive into Arusha National Park. At Momela Gate you join the support team, enjoy lunch, and begin the ascent toward Miriakamba, the first overnight stop. The longer 4WD track route winds through rich lower-slope forest, passes the striking arched fig tree, and reaches Maio Falls on the Jekukumia River. Watch for dik-dik, baboons, giraffe, and other shy forest wildlife. The path continues to Kitoto View Point for sweeping views of the plains and distant Kilimanjaro, then crosses the Meru Crater Plain, an area often visited by various game animals.
Overnight: Miriakamba Huts
Meals: Lunch, Dinner
Day 2: Miriakamba Huts to Saddle Huts (plus optional Little Meru)
The day starts with a climb through open grassy slopes before entering forest where elephants are sometimes seen. Guides encourage a steady pole pole (slow) pace to aid acclimatization. A rest stop at Mgongo wa Tembo (“Elephant’s Back”) offers fine views across the Crater Plain and toward the ash cone ahead. The trail then enters alpine terrain on the way to Saddle Huts. After settling in and resting, an optional short out-and-back hike to Little Meru peak provides extra acclimatization and rewarding vistas.
Overnight: Saddle Huts
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 3: Saddle Huts to Meru Summit to Momela Gate
An early-morning start in darkness aims for a sunrise arrival at the summit. After crossing the saddle and climbing onto a ridge, the route reaches Rhino Point, followed by a brief descent and rock-face traverse onto the crater rim, which is then followed upward. As the sky begins to lighten, Meru Summit comes into view along with the silhouettes of Mawenzi and Kibo on Kilimanjaro. The final stretch is steep, rocky, and potentially slippery. At the top, celebrate and take in views that can stretch as far as Kenya. After a rest and lunch back at Saddle Huts, the afternoon descent continues past Miriakamba and follows the more direct trail to Momela Gate. Near the gate the path passes Tululusia Falls and crosses the Meru Plain, where giraffe, buffalo, and other wildlife are frequently spotted from a safe distance. At the gate you bid farewell to the crew before transfer to your next destination.
