4 Days Mount Meru Trek
Pick this 4-day Mount Meru trek that has an extra day for acclimatization. Mount Meru ranks as Tanzania’s third-highest peak at 4,566 meters, surpassed only by Kibo and Mawenzi on the Kilimanjaro massif. Formed by volcanic forces in the East African Rift, a massive eruption roughly 250,000 years ago destroyed its entire eastern side, leaving a dramatic crater that remains striking today. The mountain sits at the heart of Arusha National Park, giving the first day’s trek special appeal. In the lower reaches, an armed ranger accompanies hikers past baboons, buffalo, giraffes, and other wildlife. The route climbs through successive vegetation belts—grassland, rainforest, heath and moorland, then alpine desert—making Meru a rewarding climb that often receives less attention than neighboring Kilimanjaro. Technically more demanding than Kilimanjaro, Meru requires solid fitness; the final 1,000 meters are steep, though no technical climbing skills are needed. Many climbers use Meru as an acclimatization trek before attempting Kilimanjaro; combined itineraries can be arranged on request. The standard recommendation is a 4-day ascent. Fit, experienced high-altitude hikers may complete it in 3 days, descending all the way to Momella Gate after the summit on the final day. Accommodation is in basic wooden huts.
